Trial Classes at Our Academy
FAQ

How can I be sure that your teachers are qualified?

This is a crucial question to consider when choosing a dance school for your child. Do not hesitate to request proof, as there are no governing bodies that regulate dance schools. Unlike school teachers, dance instructors are not required to be qualified to teach dance or to establish a dance school. It is concerning that many dance teachers at pre-vocational and even some well-known vocational dance schools lack teaching qualifications.

There is a common misconception that having a background as a professional dancer or holding a dance degree automatically qualifies one to teach children based solely on performance experience. Always verify the training and qualifications of your child's teachers'. A good, well-trained teacher will never be offended by a request for evidence.

At SGDA we are always more than willing to evidence our training and qualifications, you can find our 'Register of Teacher' listings by clicking below:

What should my dancer wear to their trial classes?

If your dancer already owns dance kit then they should wear that. If they do not own a dance kit then leggings/shorts and a tee is recommended, we are happy for them to dance in bare feet however, if they are trialling a tap class then clean non-marking sole trainers are great.

My child already attends a dance school, can they come to SGDA as well?

It is a generally accepted etiquette amongst dance schools that we do not accept dancers who are actively attending another school, but we appreciate that some people may like to try other schools before they officially transfer. Once they have made the decision to transfer to Sophie Gallie they would need to cease training with other schools in the following genres: Ballet, Pointe Work, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Contemporary, Lyrical, Musical Theatre, Strength & Limber.

Does SGDA take part in competitions?

In short, no. SGDA values individual and collaborative growth over competitive dance and the "I". Instead of emphasising solos and group routines, the academy prioritises unity and teamwork in the performing arts as a whole. Competing dance schools and students against each other often creates a non-collaborative environment that does not align with SGDA's vision for its legacy.

We believe in providing comprehensive training that readies students for the demands of the current industry, focusing on adaptability and resilience. Our goal is to nurture young individuals who can work cohesively, offer support, and show kindness to every dancer, regardless of their training background or institution. These values extend to all aspects of their lives, from college and university to the workplace.

In contrast to the competitive model, SGDA emphasises strong technique and unity as a universal foundation that surpasses the necessity for competition.
